Final Hurrah for Girls U9's & U8's at Bucks CC - 15 July 2006
The 2005/6 playing season finally closed for AFC Lightning as the under 9 girls and under 8’s made their final bow at the Bucks CC tournament in Stoke Mandeville on Saturday.
Led by coaches Tony Killinger, Greg Gibbs and Sharon Keens – with FA Level 2 coach Jim Dale giving a helping hand wherever it was needed, the teams performed well on yet another hot and sunny day.
The girls U9’s (playing exclusively against boys teams) had a tough time losing all 4 matches, but the margin of the losses was in all but one instance small - and in the case of Downley Dynamoes by the odd goal on 2 occasions (1-2 and 0-1). Zoe scored the one and only goal for the girls but the whole squad gave a plenty and can now look forward to less sterner tests against female opposition in the Bucks League in the forthcoming season.
The U8’s meanwhile put up 2 teams and invited in 2 players from other clubs, Matt & Ashton to join the fray – and both responded positively. As usual the teams performed well and although 3 games in total were lost by small margins, there were plenty of positives, amongst them a scorching hat-trick by Georgia against one of three Samba teams. Defenders in Adam, Aidan, Danny and Ollie were resolute throughout and Opone once again showed his electric pace to good effect.
“Both squads rounded off what has been a very productive season, said Jim. The girl’s squad started from scratch and have grown immensely in confidence and stature. Meanwhile, the 8’s have moved purposely forward in a host of ways and with scouts homing in on a regular basis, we cannot have hoped for any more”.
Roll on 2006/7 !!
