The night before a Match
- After you have had your evening meal, check your football boots ready for your match, if they are not clean, clean them.
- Pack your match bag, not forgetting your boots and shin pads.
- Prepare your match kit ready to put on in the morning, check to see what the weather is going to be like and pack extra clothes if necessary. This may include hats and gloves on cold days, sun hats and sunscreen on sunny days, and raincoats and umbrellas on wet days.
- Go to bed early. A good nights sleep will help your body recover and give you more energy.
Do not stay up all night playing on the computer or watching TV. It is no good trying to play football when you are tired.

The Match Day
- Out of bed early. The quicker you wake up, the more time you have to prepare yourself for the match ahead.
- Try to have breakfast at least 45 minutes before you leave your house.
- After breakfast change into your match kit and check your match bag.
- Be ready to leave in plenty of time to reach the match.
- Prepare and pack yourself a drink for the match, this should be non fizzy.
Do not:
- lie in bed until the last minute. You need time to prepare yourself for the match ahead.
- leave the house without having breakfast. An empty stomach will lead to an empty mind.
- leave your house without going to the toilet. Not all of the teams we visit have toilets at their clubs.

At the Match
- Arrive 30 minutes before the kick-off time.
- Tell your manager that you have arrived and if you have any injuries/problems likely to affect your game.
- Start performing a few simple stretching exercises to warm up and loosen your muscles.
- When asked by your captain, start your pre-match warm up.
- After the pre-match warm up, follow your captain on some light jogging from one side of the pitch to the other
- Look smart and feel proud. Your boots should be clean, and your kit clean & pressed. Tuck shirts into shorts and keep socks rolled-up.
- When asked by your manager or coach, go to the pre-match team talk and listen.
- Ask questions if you do not understand anything. Line up in your positions ready to start the match.
- Play well and enjoy the game.
Do not:
- arrive 5 minutes before the game is about to start. If you have not arrived before the team talk, you may have to be substitute.
- hide away from the manager. If I do not know you have arrived, I cannot pick you to play.
- run towards the goal and start playing football or shooting in the goal. We want you to use your energy in the match.
- mess about when you are warming up with the captain. Listen to your captain.
Finally - Never mess about when your manager or coach is talking to you. You may miss some important information.
