Mofolo Knights

AFC Lightning now have an international twin club - and one that we can be proud of being associated with.

We are delighted to announce that The Mofolo Knights - a club who are located in South Africa, in an area called Mshenguville, in a suburb of Soweto called Mofolo. They have an open team, an under 16, an under 14 and an under 12 team.  Most of the youngsters come from the surrounding informal (wood and iron houses) as well as the surrounding formal (brick houses) neighbourhood.

Our contact on the ground is Soweto is Denis Creighton.  He says, the children play in a blue and white kit, but All the youngsters from the club have to share the one set and there is a huge need for boots.

The kids in Soweto and elsewhere are passionate about their soccer which is the most played sport in South Africa especially amongst the black population.  Many of them support the big teams in the UK such as Man U, The Gunners, Liverpool and the like.  The two big teams in Soweto are the Orlando Pirates and the Kaiser Chiefs.

Welcome to our friends in South Africa and remember, the World Cup hits South Africa in a few years time !

Mofolo Knights Football Club - Fact File

Locality:
Mofolo in Soweto, Johannesburg.

Origins: The club has its roots in Zola another suburb Soweto dating back to the 1970’s and relocated to Mofolo in 1994. It owes its new existence to Vusi Mnisi who is the current coach and manager.  He was one of the players in the original Zola team.

Club facilities: The club is based at a gravel field situated in the informal (wood and iron) settlement called Mshenguville which is part of Mofolo.  Many of the players come from the informal settlement, the others live in the surrounding formal (brick) houses. There is a high level of unemployment and poverty in the area. The club has a constant struggle for funds.  There is no club house or other facilities.

Sponsorship: The travel and tour company, KDR Sports and Adventure Travel (Pty) Ltd runs tours to Soweto under the brand www.soweto.co.za and has developed a close relationship with the residents of Mshenguville.  In 2002 the company met Vusi and the captain of the team Bukhosibakhe (Roger) Hlomuka and agreed to sponsor the club. Initially the sponsorship was in respect of the open first team only, but this was extended to include the junior teams as well. The club now plays in blue and white strip with www.soweto.co.za emblazoned on the shirts. The logo is Ama Viyo Viyo which means “The Warriors” from the Knights in the name.

The teams: The teams playing in various leagues include:
Open or first team-plays in the “Soweto District league”,
Under 17 team,
Under 14 team,
Under 12 team,
Under 10 team.
There are presently approximately 20 open and 80 junior players in the club.

Club officials:
Director and coach:  Vusi Mnisi.
Assistant coach: Tshepo Mandla.
Manager and junior coach: Bukhosibakhe Hlomuka.

Needs and aspirations: Given the financial circumstances of the players and staff, there is an ongoing need for funding for equipment and running expenses. KDR intends to continue its sponsorship, but being a small company this is limited.
The club has a goal to be promoted on a regular annual basis until it reaches the professional level.
