What do professional footballers eat and drink ?
Typically a footballers menu is made up of 65% carbohydrate, 20% fat and 15% protein. The carbohydrate comes from foods such as pastas, rice, breads, potatoes & cereals. The fats come largely from yogurts, butter, cheeses, milk and other dairy products; whilst fish, chicken, beef & various pulses typically make up the protein. These foods are supplemented by large helpings of fresh fruit and vegetables, such as bananas, oranges, pears, kiwi, carrots, broccoli, cabbage and the like. Water or isotonic drinks are the basis of most of the beverages, with alcohol, tea, coffee and the fizzy drinks not getting much of a look in.
Our thanks to Martin Kelly of Birmingham City for the following match day players’ menu -:
Pre match:
- Melon Selection
- Grape Selection
- Cherries
- Tangerine (peeled)
- Bananas
- Full time: Thick Cut Oven Chips (not fried)
- French Bread Pizza – Chicken and Tuna.
- Chicken/Steak Sandwiches (Toasted/French Bread/Ciabatta)
- Ketchup + Mustard + Fresh Salsa
- Melon selection
- Grape Selection
- Cherries
- Tangerines (peeled)
- Bananas
Young footballers also require a healthy balanced diet all year round in order to achieve maximum potential. That isn't to say cakes, crisps, burgers, chocolate bars, pies and fizzy drinks are completely off limits, but if you want to be fit to play to your potential, then fatty, sugary type foods should be consumed in strict moderation.
Given a morning kick off here’s a good example of a healthy and helpful match-day breakfast :-
- Cereal: Porridge, Weetabix, Shredded Wheat with milk.
- Fruit: Melon, Grapefruit, Banana.
- Drink: Water and Fruit Juices.
- Other: Beans & toast, with an egg.
If your kick off is later in the day and you need to eat a lunch a couple of hours before hand, here’s what you might typically eat and drink -:
Fruit: Bananas, Melons, Cherries, Grapes, Oranges.
